The City of Osnabrück honors the historian and political publicist Prof. Dr. TONY JUDT, Director of the Remarque Institute for European Studies at New York University, as a mediator between European and American culture with the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize.

His comprehensive historical account of the history of Europe from 1945 to the present, as well as his political-publicistic work in the media, in lectures and congresses, and his committed advocacy of freedom of expression, multilateralism and peaceful conflict resolution, correspond to the attitude of Erich Maria Remarque, a citizen of the world, according to his words: "One must believe in the future, in a better future. The world wants peace."
