In recognition of his exemplary commitment to freedom and humanity, the City of Osnabrück awards the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize to Mr. Ludvik Vaculik.As a system critic, the Czech writer and journalist Ludvik Vaculik not only resisted the ideological delusions in his country, but always fought them. His persistent resistance to totalitarian rule and suppression of freedom of expression is in keeping with the words of Erich Maria Remarque: "My theme is the man of this century - the question of humanity."

Wording of the certificate: On the occasion of the awarding of the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize by the City of Osnabrück, the Joint German-Czech Historical Commission is awarded a special prize. The award of the City of Osnabrück is for the work of the historians in researching and evaluating the experiences of both peoples with the beginning, the course and the results of the Second World War as an important basis for reconciliation between the Czech Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany.
