The silent death of nature - How we are saving biodiversity and ourselves

Unnoticed by many, more and more animals and plants are disappearing from our environment, which is increasingly endangering our livelihoods. Matthias Glaubrecht is one of the best-known evolutionary biologists in Germany. For years, he has been explaining the importance of biodiversity and the devastating consequences of species extinction. Here he describes the reasons why we take the biodiversity crisis too little notice and too little seriously: We focus too much on climate change, in addition to the failure of traditional nature conservation and an often misguided science policy that provides too little funding for ecological and biosystematic research. Glaubrecht calls for action to finally be taken: this means consistently protecting sufficiently large nature conservation areas for functioning biocoenoses, renaturalizing them and promoting biodiversity research.
