The Peace Prize
Every two years, Osnabrück awards the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize.
Erich-Maria-Remarque-peace-prizeTHE SUBWAYS remain one of the most exciting live bands on the current touring circuit, thrilling crowds with their explosive rock sound and wild stage performances.
Back in 2005, with an average age of just 18, Billy, Charlotte, and Josh crashed onto the international music scene with their debut album Young For Eternity and the rock-club anthem Rock & Roll Queen. NME called them “the sexiest thing to sweep rock ‘n’ roll off its feet in years!”. The song appeared on hit teen drama The OC and in Guy Ritchie’s film RocknRolla, earning it a permanent place on Spotify’s rock playlists.
The band has released four albums. Their sophomore record All Or Nothing (2008), produced by Butch Vig in LA, was “buoyed with emotional heft and supernova guitar riffs, wired around a maturing song craft” (MOJO). The songs were written while Billy was recovering from vocal cord surgery. Money And Celebrity (2011) followed, filled with “brilliantly anarchic punk-pop vignettes” and featuring the Radio 1 A-listed single We Don’t Need Money To Have A Good Time. Their fourth, self-titled album saw Billy step into the role of producer, which Q Magazine praised as “on par with the best things they’ve ever written”.
The COVID pandemic cut short their 40+ date Young For Eternity Anniversary Tour, but Billy used the time to record Album 5 in his new Hertfordshire studio, while Charlotte and Josh worked remotely. The album, built partly in makeshift under-stair vocal booths, was released in early 2023.
In April 2021, the band signed with Alcopop and released the politically charged, Black Lives Matter-inspired single Fight. They described it as “a letter in two parts: a gesture of solidarity with the Black community and a wake-up call to the white community”.
In October 2020, drummer and founding member Josh Morgan left the band after finishing his contributions to Album 5. The Subways welcomed Camille Phillips (formerly of The Ramonas) as the new drummer. After a warm reception from fans on the rescheduled 2021 tour, she was officially announced as a full member in January 2022.
Live is where The Subways truly shine. They’ve played over 100 international festivals – from Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage to Reading & Leeds, Rock am Ring, Hurricane, and more. Whether in front of 100 or 250,000 people, their shows are always high-octane and unforgettable.
“We’ll rock till we drop – there’s nothing more exciting than being on tour. Seeing people scream the words and dance to songs you’ve written is the greatest high. Every day on stage, in new cities and countries, making new friends – it’s the most amazing thing we’ve ever experienced!”
