In 1808, two new cemeteries were established in Osnabrück. Burials were no longer allowed in or around the churches. The Hase cemetery for the citizens of the old town and farmers north of Osnabrück. The Johannisfriedhof for the citizens of the Neustadt and the southern farming communities of the city. Today, the cemetery is located in the Kalkhügel and Schölerberg districts. It reflects the economic development and population growth in the second half of the 19th century. There was still room for small businesses in the new town, which expanded into factories. Their founders were often buried in family burial grounds, which are still very representative today. But people who were famous beyond the city limits, such as the aviation pioneer Gustav Tweer (1893 - 1916), whose mother owned a plasterer's store in Johannisstraße, also found their final resting place here. The cemeteries of honor for the soldiers of the First World War who died in Osnabrück's military hospitals and for the bombing victims of the Second World War are touching.
