Jazz
Of course, superlatives should always be used with caution, but Avishai Cohen is undoubtedly one of the most influential bassists in contemporary jazz. The trade journal Bassplayer Magazine even goes one step further and lists him as one of the most influential instrumentalists of the 20th century.

Avishai Cohen (bass, vocals) will be performing at the 1st Osnabrück Jewish Culture Festival with his band The Hebrew Book, consisting of Itay Simhovich (piano), Yali Stern (drums), Yonatan Voltzok (trombone) and Yuval Drabkin (saxophone). The musicians have put together an exclusive program for the festival, which includes classics from their more than 30-year career as well as new songs.

Like Marina Maximilian, who opened the festival two days ago, Cohen enjoyed a classical piano education. He discovered jazz at the age of 14 through the music of American electric bassist Jaco Pasotius (1951-1987), who made his mark with his band Weather Report and as a soloist.

After graduating from Music & Arts High School in Jerusalem and completing his military service, Cohen moved to New York in 1992, where he initially made a living as a busker and street musician. He continued his training at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Shortly afterwards, Cohen joined Chick Corea's band and worked with Herbie Hancock and Bobby McFerrin, among others. His international breakthrough finally came with his first solo album "Adama" (1998), which presents Avishai Cohen not only as an excellent musician, but also as a virtuoso composer who succeeds in creating extraordinary arcs of tension in his songs.
